Anstiss & Co. Partners with Junior Achievement

On June 17, 2011, the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA) held its first annual CPA Day of Service, offering CPAs an opportunity to volunteer and make a positive impact in their community.

Anstiss & Co. CPAs Mary Tiano and Brendan Toolin partnered with Junior Achievement of Northern New England and spent the morning teaching a group of 19 energetic second grade students from the Lowell Community Charter Public School about their community. Through a series of activities, the students learned about the roles of workers in their community, the work they perform, how workers are paid, what taxes are and how they are used, and where to save money.

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating K-12 students about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. Junior Achievement programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace.

In one of the activities, the students experienced receiving a paycheck (which they liked), then learned about what it is like to pay taxes (which they did not like). The students gained a tremendous amount of knowledge from Mary and Brendan, who enjoyed teaching the class about their community and the future impact they will have.
